My first internship was an amazing experience, largely thanks to my mentor. She balanced mentoring another college student intern, which gave me insight into different teaching strategies. Initially, the other student intern seemed standoffish, but over time, I had opportunities to work with students one-on-one and got to know their personalities. I spent a significant portion of my internship assisting one student who required additional support with their assignments. By working through each task, I learned about his communication preferences and how best to help him. I got to do a lesson where I was reading a book with the class and having the students answer questions and share their responses, which made the lesson feel successful. I loved everything about this internship.
